He has a disproportionately long torso, according to some ESPN swimming analyst. Which means he has disproportionately short legs. However, he also has big feet. These traits help him swim very fast.
But they also make you wonder w/r/t his status as a sex icon. You know what they say about guys with big feet, short legs, and long torsos, don't you?
Wow. You've certainly done your research on Mr. Phelps.
I've never been much of a fan of his--or considered him a sex symbol--until this year. Damn he looks good coming out of the water.

I'm a little weirded out by whatever's going on with his belly button in that photo, but you can't deny those pelvic bones. Sweet Jesus.
