The Dems have the votes in the House and Senate to pass the bailout bill without the Republicans. Why not quickly come up with a bailout proposal that could pass along party lines? I don't know what an extremely progressive form of the bailout would look like exactly -- I mean, nationalizing our financial institutions is already super leftist -- but why not give it a try? If the Republicans fail to come along the Democrats can take full credit. And as John McCain is proving, even if you take full credit that doesn't necessarily mean you have to absorb any of the blame (you know, should the bailout fail).
UPDATE: Noah Millman concurs:
...If I were a member of the Democratic Leadership, I would not be pushing too hard. If this vote fails, the GOP is the reason. The Democrats met the Administration more than halfway, and the GOP leadership could not deliver the promised 80 votes. Tomorrow, the Democrats introduce their own bill, pass it on a party-line vote, and dare the Administration to veto.
